a Way-Past-your-Bedtime Story

I wrote and drew this story back in 1993 I believe. It's fairly charming and some of the art is really remarkable (especially the protagonist's "cloak"). I tried to get it published at the time, but at this point have too many problems with it, or else I'd publish it myself. There are parts where the art is a a bit weak, but mostly it's the writing.... the writing is weak and disconnected all the way through. This is likely becuase i drew it and THEN wrote it. but despite all that, it's still a fun jaunt, and there are enough parts that i still enjoy perusing through it.

As well, shortly after posting this story on-line, I recieved several emails from people asking if i would want them to try and re-write it, edit-it up. And so i held a contest, to which below are the "rules" I posted, and then the contestant's versions, including winnners and runner-ups. So, check 'em out!
So, the "Way Past Your Bedtime Story Re-Writing Contest". The basic rules will be this: submit by email a rewrite of the first ten pages by January 7, 2002 (monday). The one I chose as my favorite will get a White T-shirt (yay!). The hope is to publish this if it works well, so if you win, I'll be asking you to write the full thing, in exchange for a set of all 6 bruno books, which will give me only the basic rights to put it up on my web page with the my pictures indefinitely, but not to make any money off of it. And if it works well enough to actually publish (book form), the submitter would still retain full rights to their text (aside from my web posting of it) and we would negotiate a print publishing agreement from there (though, know that it will not likely make much money, so I wouldn't expect this to be much of a money-making venture).
First of all, the two "winners".

Bohemian Delilah, for her ideas on plot, and who I hope will work with me on reconstructing it:

And David "Chip" Bell on his clear and sharp re-writing of the text, who i as well hope to work with on rewriting this.

In the runing-up,

John Blankenbaker, for his simplification of the text, which works lovely, and was soooo tempting, but just isn't the feel/audience I am thinking of.

And Paul Joiner, for as well doing an exemplary job at writing/rewriting the piece

And then to everyone else, who did a wonderful job, thank you so much!
