As Lasper, Knox, Picknar, and Thoos decended the staircase into the police’s system archive, Lasper said, “And down we go, deep underground. You must be right, Picknar. Veefas.” Knox said, “So, what are these veefa things? Computers? A card catalog?” Picknar said, “It’s all organic. Think of it more like a brain.” Baffled, Knox said, “But my brain forgets things all the time.” Indicating the size of his brain, Picknar said, “But you see, your brain is about yay big, wheras a brain of Veefas is the size of a spaceship terminal.” Looking back at Picknar, Knox said, “Okay, it doesn’t forget. Can it lie?” Picknar replied, “No, despite its memory, it’s kinda simpleminded, so if you tell it not to lie, it won’t lie.” Comprehending the Veefas’ nature, Knox said, “So, basically it can count cards, but it’s lousy at poker. Got it.” Looking back at him, Lasper asked, “Do you really need to be so reductionist and pigeonhole beings like that?” Knox replied frankly, “It’s just preparedness. like, now I’m ready if it asks us to play a few hands later.”
