Audri and Val sat upstairs in the lounge on Lasper’s ship. Audri said, “Here’s how I see it, Val. The only purpose to life is to eventually fertilize some soil somewhere. But when a friend leaves, even that insignificant purpose feels empty.” Audri pulled out her handbells, and Val said as dryly as she could, “Don’t do it, Audri. Not unless it’s a happy tune.” With the handbells already in the air and her tongue lolling out, Audri said, “Uhhh…” She then lowered the bells and said with annoyance, “The muse doesn’t take requests.” Val, still with her driest voice, said, “It wasn’t a request.”
