   Being that this is an alien world there is no reason to believe there aren’t some kind of horrors down there. Some of the life-forms topside are larger an heftier than on our own. Must have a lower gravity than Terran normal.

   Might be lower gravity (look at the floating jelly, the flying monster-“cat”) or something else – Earth once had giant insects thanks to a higher oxygen concentration in the atmosphere.
