My initial thought was “how you could you have never heard of Friulano cheese”…then I learned it’s actually Canadian. Which explains everything. Who knew?

When I was in Anchorage, Alaska there was a yearly betting pool on when “Breakup” would occur on the local river – when the ice would melt and the river would start flowing again. They put a pole with a flag on it on top of the ice. It was officially Breakup when it started moving.

For those who would like to listen to the Hobbit, the ancient BBC radio series comes highly recommended… beautiful oration, with specifically composed “Dwarven” music played on lovingly recreated medieval instruments.

For those who prefer to watch rather than read or hear – though rhythm really is were Tolkin shines – you might want to check out the fan-made cuts of the monstrosities that are the recent blockbuster movies: these whittle the 10 hours or so down a single feature film largely by sticking to the scenes actually in the book. What is salvaged is a surprisingly mediocre movie with seriously high production values.
