Title: The Quill Panel 1: Drawing of me walking while eating an empanada, the Atlantic Ocean in the background. Caption, "12/28/22 - Determined to find a sweet pastry, I went to Lynn's Dream Bakery and got an empanada which looked like it had fruit in it (it did: apple). It was fine." -- Panel 2: Drawing of laundry on a line with the house I'm staying in in the background. It is raining. Caption, "I hung out the laundry to dry, and 2 torrential rains later, they finally were given enough time in the sun and breeze to MOSTLY dry." -- Panel 3: Drawing of Evelyn and I talking over mugs of coffee in the house. Caption, "An acquaintance of Collette's, Evelyn, stopped by. I invited her in for a coffee. She felt the need to clean the hanging lamp (now my head will hit a cleaner lampshade), and we talked about hiking and scuba diving. Also, she brought me a sandwich." -- Panel 4: Drawing of King sleeping with his dog tongue hanging out. Caption, "King was sleeping with his tongue hanging out, and the sight made me laugh. And then I looked at his chest to make sure he was still breathing so that it was OKAY for me to laugh. Ah, old dogs." -- Panel 5: Drawing of me on the side of the Quill volcano, looking through the trees at the rest of Statia below. Caption, "12/29/22 - I finally walked up to the rim of the Quill volcano. About an hour walk from the house to the rim. It's only 2 miles, but about 1,000 feet el gain, so it was a slog!" -- Panel 6: Drawing of me hiking as a retracted hermit crab rolling across the path in front of me as I say, "what the?." Caption, "The most memorable thing for me was the hermit crabs, which are everywhere. They'd see me coming, so they'd quickly retreat to their shells. BUT IT'S A SLOPE, so that means they were constantly rolling downhill across the path as I walked. Etymology: "Quill," from the Dutch word "kuil" meaning "pit" or "hole"." -- Panel 7: Drawing of me reading a book. Caption, "I almost entirely listen to audiobooks, but I've been reading actual books (with my eyes!) since getting here. Working through "The Gastronomical Me" by MFK Fisher (which I don't want to ever end)." Also a drawing of MFK Fisher, along with a quote from The Gastronomical Me, "So it happens that when I write of hunger, I am really writing about love and the hunger for it, and warmth and the love of it and the hunger for it... and then the warmth and richness and fine reality of hunger satisfied... and it is all one." -- Panel 8: Drawing of me reading a Kindle while petting Brinnie the cat. Caption, "And now I'm reading "Kitchen" by Banana Yoshimoto, which is sweet and diverting (sometimes I read while petting Brinnie)." -- Also a drawing of Banana Yoshimoto, along with a quote from Kitchen, "People aren't overcome by situations or outside forces; defeat invades from within." -- Panel 9: Drawing of me among the shelves of Lynn's Dream bakery. Caption, "12/30/22 - This morning I only did the not-too-long walk back to Lynn's Dream to get a loaf of bread, my calves are so tired from yesterday's hike up the Quill!"
