01/26/24 – Not Metaphorically

|

Audri was sitting up by then, and looked plaintively up at Knox and Rodrigo, and she said, "you're not support staff helping Dr. Loomp in an... um... immense blue domed...recovery room, are you?" Rodrigo asked her in reply, "are you meaning... metaphorically?" Audri clarified, "not metaphorically," which caused Rodrigo to smile and reply, "well, this is getting interesting." Knox, however, was getting a little annoyed, and said to Rodrigo, that's one way of looking at it." Pondering her options, Val said, "will you two sit with us for a minute?' Knox replied, "sure. Come on, let's go over there." They all then walked to a sitting area near the hot springs. Knox then said, "if you need anything, just ask, maybe we can help." Grinning, Rodrigo added, "in the meantime, we'd love to hear more about Dr. Oompa-Loompa and the blue-skied recovery room."

I like that Rodrigo is always up for a good story.

This is some snazzy body swap tech, they’re doing a great job of speaking the language and walking bipedally. It’s also got incredible range. Targeting function could maybe use some work…

Going back to the first page of this story, we can see the sky on Tithoron is a light and slightly beige shade of pink.

If I were better at chemistry I’d speculate about what this could mean of the gas mix in Tithoron’s atmosphere.

Yes indeed, I did expect that they would have trouble walking on only two legs rather than the four they had before. I wonder how Audri and Val’s minds are dealing with having four legs with hoofs?

I am good at chemistry, . . . and you do NOT want to know what that gas mix was! Really! Just walk away from the question! Good!

. . . What? You are still here? Okay, it’s various oxides of nitrogen, and traces of petrochemical vapors, with just a bit of water vapor coating small particulates, almost but not quite exactly like the smog that Los Angeles used to have 50 years ago. The long stretched out bodies of the Tiths means that they begin life with far greater lung capacities than necessary, so even though the smog eats away at their lung tissues, they still have ample lungs for most of their lives. . . . most.

Yes indeed, I told you that you would NOT want to know.

So this is functionally… tran-galactic teleportation. Presuming you can arrange a consenting alien ahead of time, this is going to tots revolutionize the tourist industry.

Isn’t there an old classic sci fi short story with this theme? Except the alien is doing this without consent, but the human turns out to be paralyzed?

    1. @Totematika. Nope! I’d heard of it, but didn’t even know what it was about. Looks interesting, and I can definitely see how comparisons can be made. But outside of that story device itself, everything else seems different: how the story device is handled, how it plays in society, the tone, the characters, the themes. Phew! 🙂
