They’re meant to drag your attention to something that seems immediately important — and may well be. But they can also serve as distractions while the real action is happening close by. Some forty years ago, Indianapolis 500 racer A.J. Foyt was rumored to have made modifications to his car that would give him a competitive edge. And every time he pulled in to the pits, the crew would throw a cloth over the front of the car, obscuring it from sight. There are a lot of pictures of the front of A.J.’s car. But it was the back suspension that he had modified. Not many pictures of it still around.
