Chiphu needs bar-bot bad. Or to get, well you know. Or drink beer and do something stupid, humiliating and hilaraious. He needs to go an a pub-crawl! Play rugby in a drainage ditch! Race shopping carts downhill at night! Bobsleigh behind a car! Drive a snowmobie standing on the skids! Make a total prat of himself and feel good about it. Et cetera.

We don’t know the cause of Chiphu’s depression. In such instances, I find that the instinct to self-isolate until resolution comes is sensible and ought not to be tested, as seems to be the instinct of everybody else here. Soul-searching is a solitary activity, and needs to be to have any result.

Of course, that doesn’t keep me from pondering the cause of Chiphu’s depression. His only adult friend from Earth has disappeared in the maw of a strib ship thanks to the damnable symbiont. He hardly knows the others and his background suggests he’s lived with hiding his essential nature his entire life. He’s overdue some time alone to gather his senses and figure out what he really feels, what he really wants to accomplish. Which may bring him up against the idea of what he can do to help stop the stribs, but not too soon.

In the meantime, I’m just glad no one has pointed out that he’s now the only male in a ship otherwise crewed by females and bots. As difficult as that might be for some people to process, I get the impression Chiphu’s source of depression is deeper, and older, and tougher. He’s got a tough journey he has to make alone. I’d leave him to it until he finds what he’s looking for.
