This week, our friend Christy helped Cedra and I build a compostable toilet. Fun. πŸ™‚

But the Spacetrawler has Emily in their favor, and Dimitri, and O’Kingly, and the Three Amigas, and…

Do you really want to threaten Dimitri’s girlfriend?

I’m not sure if Christopher is the kind of guy who just happens to have a drill press sitting around the house, but I’m going to choose to believe it anyway.

I hope you’re using the Humanure system: If you can keep the compost between 160 and 170 degrees F for 3 weeks, you’ll kill over 99% of the bacteria that cause illness in humans. You can then use the result in your vegetable gardens.

No he means the toilet itself. You said compostable toilet Christopher, but I think you mean composting toilet. Unless you want the entire toilet, metal and all, to turn into compost?

@Bruce Eckel : Well, off the top of my pointy little head:

The material from a composting toilet (here’s a shout-out to all my fellow grammar Nazis out there!) should be put into an enclosed space in order to keep as much heat in as possible. The simplest solution is to dig a pit. You should line the pit with something water-impermeable to avoid contaminating the groundwater. The traditional “two-holer” outhouse didn’t have two holes to encourage sharing. You’d use one hole for an entire year, then give it one final stir and seal the hole up for a year. You’d use the other hole (a separate pit) for the next year, then stir and seal. By that time, the first pit will have finished composting, and if you’ve kept an eye on your temperatures for the first 3 weeks after sealing it up there should be no dangerous bacteria or parasites in the material. You go down in the hole, dig it all up, then mix it up with whatever extra materials you need to either make soil additions or maybe even make new soil.

If you live where there ground is mostly clay, look into what’s called “compost sandwiches”, “sheet composting”, or “lasagna gardening”. You can build a box covering the area(s) you want for your gardens, then build up your sandwiches using the output of your composting toilet between the layers of cardboard and newspaper. Whatever method you use, count on it being a year before it’s properly decomposed.

I like your woodworking style, Christopher.

That said, Feenky is showing his lineage from Captain Renault exceptionally well. What remains to be seen is how well duped he has been by the Stribs, and to what extent their appeal to turn a dark race into enslaved nannies works on him. Where, in his mind, is the line between the legal and the acceptable? Like it or not, he’s going to show us by his reaction to what’s in the Strib ship’s hold.

I can hardly wait. Getting another lemonade in the meantime. Hey, it’s summer!

I keep thinking two words… one of them is definitely “tedious”.. I think the other word is a plural form of a very impolite name for female reproductive organs.

“Tedious runts” or something like that.
