01/09/26 – In Luck

|

Shepherding Audri and Val into a cell, officer Onjie said, "Hey, don't fret too much about being arrested. You happen to be in luck." Val said, "When you say 'luck,' it sounds like you mean 'enema.' Audri said to Val, "I suppose he didn't specify if the luck was good or bad." Onjie continued, "Planet Clentity has been working hard to solve the homelessness crisis, and you're just in time to be added to the rolls of the ship compassion I." In an aside to Audri, Val said, "You may not smell it, but I smell bullshit coming on." Audri replied, "You really think that being Gen X means you're the only one who smells bullshit, don't you?" Val said, "Trust me, I do not feel higher-caliber or superior in any way. You're totally welcome to smell all the bullshit you want." Indignant, Audri said, "Well, I do." Looking skeptical, Val said, "Heh. Sure. But do you smell the depth of it?" Audri rolled her eyes and threw her hands up in exasperation.

When people who want something from you or want to get rid of you tell you you’re in luck, why does it usually means they’re in luck?

“Why, it IS a Bull-class ship! How’d you guess?”
    “We’re Bull ship detectors.”
“Okay… Anyway, since you don’t have any money, we’re putting you in steerage.”

I guess that depends on whether it ever lands on a planet, (Ark B), or just disappears into space/the local Sun (Kornbluth).

Also, whether our friends in Lasper’s ship will be able to track it.

I can still hardly believe that gen Xers really think they are in the cultural vanguard somehow, despite being firmly middle aged and fully invested in the status quo. They cant “smell bullshit” at all, there is just a different flavour of bullshit brought out specially for the gen Xer.
Forget marketing your beer with “drink our beer and women will have sex with you”, no, you triple the price, and advertise it as organic carbon free range vegan non gmo unfluoridated low fat beer, and they slurp it up just like the sheep they presume boomers to be.
And of course that ad campaign was created by a millennial.
The boomers abandoned their hippy counterculture the instant it was no longer beneficial to them. But gen X clung on hard to the idea that they are young rebels somehow, even 30 years after there was even a grain of truth to it.
Perhaps every generation is a cynic in comparison to the one before, but gen X were the ones that invested their identity in the idea. Of course, to younger generations, that just smells of… bullshit.
