Honestly, Rodrigo is a bit of my mouthpiece here, I don’t think I can think of better advice.

Rodrigo continued his story, “Both Roger and I ended up being excellent navigators, and found our way back. But three other boys in our troop got lost. One got hypothermia, and the two others started a forest fire while trying to light a smoke-signal fire. I suppose one could infer that the point of the story is: even when things end in miserable disaster, it can still be worth it for the time spent with the people involved.” And then Rodrigo added, “And no matter how foolish you act, remember that others are probably doing even stupider things.” They looked at each other, and then Rodrigo clinked their glasses together and they both smiled kindly. Rodrigo returned towards the chip, and Picknar, looking a little less upset, stayed looking up at the stars.

On a ship of fools, be a navigator.
You can use your characters as your mouthpiece, but never go the full Heinlein.
Uh, wow, that’s a lot of scouts getting lost on a single trip
