  1. mmm maybe Julie needs to experience violence and its consequences by first hand, and somehow she could learn something…

In addition, somehow my feelings about Julie now are slightly different from the beginning of the story…

  2. Not a very good story if everyone starts off enlightened! πŸ˜‰

  3. No fair Julie, you gotta hit him on the side with the arm, it’s no fun if he can’t possibly hit you back!

  4. I wonder what will happen next? Something that will get the two warring factions to stop fighting? Or the humans exterminate the aliens (to them) as normal humans would. A scorpion will always be one.

  5. Ummm…. Sorry, but as a professional soldier I have to comment. The “bad” humans have space ship technology so I would assume they can manage to make a couple of attack aircraft and/or artillery pieces, even mortars, to scare off/destroy the charge setters. And nobody practiced in war marches through a pass like that, waiting to be annihilated by set landslides. No point, no scouts, no flankers? What worked for the Swiss in horse cavalry times (mining the passes) does not apply today. Any nation with a modest airborne force could take the Swiss (at least until the Swiss cancel their credit). The Swiss air force is outdated and only works from 9 to 5 these days. They depend on the good will of their neighbors to protect them – not a wise policy given European history.

    Let’s just assume they couldn’t. πŸ™‚

  7. Hey Chris (or Stewart, probably) Why don’t the archives list all of the Yontengu strips? It only goes back to Artifacts 7, or a month ago.

  8. Concerning “bad” humans and their tech: one thing is certain, their guns are not very accurate.

  9. @War pig:
If we consider that they spent much time wandering through space, maybe we could assume that they forgot some of their military skills …

  10. @Karlos F.:

If there’s one things humans never forget how to do, it’s fight. Read our history. Plus the “bad” humans have been fighting the aliens for years now. Their combat skills would have been quite practiced. Even Neanderthals wouldn’t fall for that avalanche trick more than once, let alone a supposed space-faring people who must have sensors, binoculars, NVG, etc, etc. But since it’s a cartoon, like anthropomorphic talking animals (Vachel and the gang), and hipster vampire angst, we’ll just have to play along. πŸ˜‰

But as a retired soldier I could not let it pass without comment. I’ll be good for a while, now.

  11. Even the “attacking a peaceful nation” thing seems a bit dubious from a practicality standpoint. It opens up a second front and drains resources. So there must be a motivation beyond “we’re warlike, it’s what we do.”

Whoops! Thanks for pointing that out, Herandar! It was something to do with the plugin we’re using to auto-generate that list. I think Chris has it fixed now.

  13. The way I understand it, resources may be extremely scarce and this is a continent, not an island. The best explanation is that the attackers are often just rogue units who broke off, hoping to invade the “hippy” settlement and don’t have the fallback to air cover, or other things like that. It is altogether conceivable that the peaceful nation is even warned in advance by whichever nation the marauding troops broke off from.
