Brushing up (and learning more) on drawing backgrounds, this one done by studying the works of Walt Kelly — tools which I might use to little-or-very-great-degree with the “Little Dee” graphic novel (script approved, layout has begun).

  1. As it happens, Vagus stays in Star.

  2. Evil Midnight Lurker

Well at least she’s open about Head Vagus talking to her.

  3. Any friend of Walt Kelly’s is a friend of mine. Ever seen his ‘Peter Wheat’ comics? Very pastoral stuff, and of course there’s BONE.

  4. Deck us all with Boston Charlie
    Walla Walla, Wash, and Kalamazoo!
    Nora’s freezin’ on the trolley,
    Swaller dollar cauliflower Alleygaroo!
    Don’t we know archaic barrel,
    Lullaby Lilla Boy, Louisville Lou.
    Trolley Molly don’t love Harold,
    Boola Boola Pensacoola Hullabaloo!

  5. It may be paranoia after a few space horror movies and Dr. Who episodes, but I would of welded that door shut in a heart beat. We can cut through it later.

  6. You might not be able to weld or cut any bulkhead on that ship. We don’t have the full background specs on this ship or the first meeting with the aliens. However it suggests it was a long distance communication which they now don’t have a copy of. So it is verging on untenable. I suppose they verified that the signal came from beyond their previous range. And Olivia seems to be hallucinating. Schizophrenia? Or something new?

Now that the ship seems that much smaller. Olivia is fortunate they didn’t decide to space her or just kill her and put her into stasis for analysis later or she could have been put in stasis alive for interrogation and psych scan. Or they don’t have that capacity which is why she is locked away.

  7. I didn’t mean Olivia, but the one in lock down. Can’t recall her name…Star.
    My bad.

  8. CthulhuEarring

While the cast is small, a cast page would still be nifty.

  9. Evil Midnight Lurker

Oh, Walt. You’re the only reason in the world to hate Chuck Jones.

(Rumor has it Kelly hated the Jones-helmed Pogo cartoon special so much that he worked himself to death trying to do one of his own. 🙁 )

Oh, roar a roar for Nora,
    Nora Alice in the night.
    For she has seen Aurora
    Borealis burning bright.
    A furore for our Nora!
    And applaud Aurora seen!
    Where, throughout the summer, has
    Our Borealis been?

  10. It’s interesting to explore politics in terms of what individual members of a crew take with them into space (e.g. The Red Mars | Blue Mars | Green Mars Series).

Here it’s fitting that only Star (and perhaps Vagus) seem to qualify for politics, every other crew member would appear to be too much of a slacker and/or narcissist to actually be part of a movement bigger than themselves…

Of course Star is deranged enough so that explanations of her actions in political or any other terms smell like rationalizations after the fact, but maybe that’s just what Chris wants us to think 😉
