11/07/12 Dustin Makes Plans

So, I’m not sure how many of you remember, but one of the levels of the Spacetrawler Kickstarter campaign was offering to let readers give a means of death to one of the Dustys. This one makes the third. Thank you to Mark for stacking his body out of order, Corey for the dropping drop bears on him, and Jason for smothering him in an Australian Flag. I couldn’t have thought of more idiotic painful lovely ways to off the poor bastard. Thank you both for the fun ideas, and supporting the strip. πŸ™‚

Not much going on. A decent Monday of drawing and getting work done, but Tuesday was all errands. What a pain in the neck. The Glens Falls Chronicle Book Fair was very nice. Good to meet local writers, especially since I’ve been putting so much time into writing prose lately. This Sunday i may stop by the Albany Comic Book Show, but I’m not sure what my schedule looks like and if I can make it, and even if I do I won’t be tabling — so it’s not really an announcement. πŸ™‚

Went to another open-studio model-drawing class. I feel it will take a bit to get back in the swing of things, I’ve done so little model drawing over the past decade, but I think I’ve done a bit better than last time — well, excepting the arms and head. It’s weird. I reached a level of proficiency that i can clearly see what’s wrong and am almost baffled that my hand won’t put the right thing on paper. But all it will take is a little more brushing up.
Lastly, it’s November. I know this is wayyyy too early for ME to be thinking about holidays gifts, but I know that YOU might be. IF you are going to be buying any gifts or gift certificates from Amazon, know that if you do so by going there through my LINK RIGHT HERE, I will earn a decent percentage from the sale of almost anything you purchase (or put in your cart) on that visit. So, please, support my work from almost zero effort and no money from your end. (or, of course, as always, my books and Merch over at TopatoCo too).

    ‘that jerk Yuri’

I normally think of ‘jerk’ as a masculine adjective. However, there really isn’t a (polite) feminine version. Not that anyone should go around calling wimmen ‘jerks’. It sounds odd, but the alternatives aren’t any better. There’s always metaphor, but a quick jerk plummets from the tongue and gets right out of the way. Or something. (did that sound naughty to anyone?)

Chris, I live on the Jersey shore and this is the first time i’ve been able to get online in a week and a half because of the hurricane. This is the first place I came to, so after all that i’ve been through I just wanted to say thanks for making me laugh man…

So in his usual utterly oblivious, bigoted, idiotic way Dustin saves the entire Earth including his beloved Australia without even knowing it. Go Dusty!

And on an unrelated note, I’ve used “jerk” to insult women. It never seemed to me to be particularly tied to gender or sexuality. Then again I’ve used “bastard” to insult women too and that, a few hundred years ago, was a pejorative that was strongly attached to illegitimate male children whose fathers were land owners.

    Language changes.

Being an Australian, I have never, in my whole life heard anyone here say “God Bless Australia”. Most Australians would put that in the “weird american patriotism” basket. We might say “Bloody Great Place” or “Aussie Aussie Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!” or maybe “Pass me a beer”!

You could quote Monty Python: “Australia! Australia! Australia! We love you! Amen. Crack tube”.
(A tube being a beer can)

I just discovered this comic last week and I’m already caught up. (In case you’re like “Wow that is hella unimpressive thanks” I am a college student, so there are a ton of other things I could have been doing. But I wanted to do this instead. Because it’s awesome.)

I love the art and I love the characters and your writing is amazing and funny. Just wanted to say keep it up from your newest diehard fan!

    …Also, I’d totally bang Dimitri

@ N@: Well this is Dusty we’re talking about here. From what we’ve seen of him, crazy cross-eyed takes-self-too-seriously nationalist stuff like that would be right up his alley.

…Also, on an unrelated note, “crack tube” means something verrrry different over here.

  7. Jonesy

Mwahaha! Dustin saves planet Earth, just because he can actually… you know, think. That’s actually very nice development, considering we would be dead by now. And also, because some other thing interfering with the destruction of Earth would be maybe boring. Go, Dusty!

    @Christopher

It’s funny, I’ve been asking around, and everyone has agreed that we just don’t say things like that… Not even the Prime Minister says anything particularly patriotic. The times that Australians are at their most patriotic is when they are watching sport, and that’s when we use something like “Aussie, Aussie Aussie!”.

And whilst something like 60 percent of people profess to be Christian over here, most people are only vaguely Christian and never go to church. Actively invoking God’s name is very rarely done unless it’s a swear word. πŸ™‚

Anyway, keep up the good work! Spacetrawler is one of the four web comics that I jump on when I see it arrive in my inbox. πŸ™‚ Oh, and I loved the drop bears, made me laugh out loud!
