No matter how old I get, I don’t think I’ll ever fully abandon fart jokes.

Ah, sleep gas. That works really fast. And on a wide variety of completely different organisms with wildly different metabolisms due to appearing and evolving separately on entirely different worlds.

But if stun rays work universally, then there’s no reason why sleep gases wouldn’t also work universally. This is why soft sci-fi settings are so much more convenient! 🙂

  2. somehow farting and smelling farts doesn’t usually make me sleepy — but i can see how a biological imperative to immediately fall unconscious in the presence of fart smells might occasionally be useful, especially if my brother and i are in the back seat of the car on a long road trip.

Ah, sleep gas. Makes the combatants easier to disarm, but harder to put into containment — whether that’s cells or storage bins doesn’t matter at this point.

When the Russians used gas against a theatre full of Chechen terrorists and their 800-odd hostages in 2002, they killed between 120-170 people. All 40 terrorists were shot while unconscious. Since the special forces never revealed the composition of the gas used, more people were permanently injured by inappropriate treatment for what they weren’t poisoned by. Simplified things, I suppose, for some.

Now thought to be a fast acting variant of fentanyl. A large amount of Narcan would have helped, as would have briefing the rescuers. Apparently there is a protocol that can help victims of an opiate overdose survive, if you know to use it.

      Security don’t you know.

I vaguely remember that they had an antidote available, but there’s rather a significant logistical problem when it comes to sorting through 800 people to determine which ones need immediate treatment and which ones can be safely left to sleep it off. I wouldn’t know about long-term effects.
