02/28/24 – Just Wearing Costumes

|

Pleading, Val indicated herself and said, "Audri. I'm val. We met in the hot springs back in New Mexico. Somehow we're in alien bodies on an alien planet." Audri lifted a dismissive hand and laughed, "hahahaha! Yeahhhh, I don't believe that for a second." Humoring Val, Audri continued, "sorry to react with skepticism, but there are no such things as aliens. You and that other person are just wearing costumes." Getting annoyed at herself, Audri then added, "ugh. I knew I should have waited for my own hot spring pool, you never know what randos you're going to be soaking with. And now my safety may be determined by a... um... what's your pronoun?" Val said, "she. her." Audri continued, "by a woman who is clearly deranged. And I'm sure the next nutty thing you say is going to break me." Val, trying to be supportive said, "trust me. I'm as sane and emotionally balanced as you." Audri burst into tears, "Wahhh!" Val said, "with possibly more life experience."

If anyone trying to help me told me they were as sane and emotionally balanced as me, I’d be worried too.

It’s pretty hard for me to track which one is which, between these two fuzzy beings. And then tracking which human went into which alien makes it even harder, so now all four characters are kind of starting back at square one for me. Maybe more visual cues to their past selves or at least differences in their alien bodies would help?

The facial expressions on Val are priceless and too notch, though.

But looking back, Audri was the one playing hand bells. I would’ve expected her to be the more stable one, better able to handle a crisis. Also I thought it was Val (“hesitant suicide pact person”) who was concerned about hot springs randos, not Audri.

    Stage One: Denial.

The question is what stage follows this, on an alien world with a chance the authorities are after you and the madman who produced this situation is either in custody, undergoing a mental evaluation (hey, they have brain-reading automation, remember?) or dead.

Safety might be your only option left. If you can find it. Which I doubt.

Nope. They did indeed only meet at the hot springs.

I just ran through the early pages again. Audri seems to have a boyfriend named Nick, but they don’t live together. Val appears to be on her own, but just invited her best friend Jo to move in with her as an alternative to going through with their suicide pact.
