I think cats (and some dogs) are secretly attracted to people who show disdain for them (pretended or not).

Corralling Thoos and Picknar off to the side, Rodrigo said, “Make room. Knox is coming through to save the day.” Knox went to the window and stared at Purrloin. Purrloin looked back at him. Knox said, “I don’t care if you do it or not, you little wretched rat.” Purrloin snubbed him by turning away, but in doing so her paws ended up pressing through two buttons. Rodrigo said, “Whoever said ‘love makes the world go ’round,’ never met Knox.” Purrloin purred as Knox pet her. Knox said, “I’m petting it to reward it for accidentally freeing us, not because it’s soft and purring.”

Reminds me of my late brother. Always said that he hated cats, always had at least one.
Purrloin always liked Knox, and dislikes Thoos.

Knox knows that cats will do just what you don’t want them to.

The ? should be a star. Stupid Patreon.
That is the difference between Cat People and People who like Cats.
I think on some level the cat is also appreciating that with nobody out on the ledge, there’s nothing to push/trip OFF the ledge.
And that would be cat-astrophic.
Ah, yes. Talk To The Tail! And, then I press the buttons. Knox is as much a sucker for soft and purring as I am.
Poor Purrloin. If only the ledge had been wider, there would have been room to both snub and NOT press the buttons.
Cats can sense disdain in humans. And it attracts them, because it’s so like their own. They too don’t give a fig about you, or your scratchies, unless they need a lap to nap in or a can opened for their bowl. Then your dislike just makes the mood. What more could a cat want?
And to think the ancient Egyptians worshipped cats.
Egyptian “worship” of cat is something cats can do without, honestly.
Mostly it meant that cats were bred just to be slaughtered and embalmed so people could buy mummified cats for good luck…
Mummified cats -are- easier on the furniture.
Not related to the current page, but there’s a recent paper trying to re-frame the double slit experiment to mean not that photons are both a particle and a wave, but that photons are always particles that just exist in light and dark states.

And so I feel that the greased dark light drive is now vindicated by science!
