Val turned to Rodrigo and Knox and said, “And… Rodrigo and Knox? Um. First off, what are you even doing here in space? “I’m a little confused.” Knox said, “We were being chased and Rigo got shot while we were escaping.” Rodrigo said, “And in my favorite jacket too.” Knox said, “Getting aboard the rescue ship was our only option. And then, well, in for a penny in for a pound.” Grinning, Rodrigo said, “Plus. Holy shit, right? We’re in space. I wouldn’t miss it.” Knox rolled his yees and said, “Yeah. I mean, so far everything has been horrible, but aside from that, it is kind of amazing.” Smiling, Val said, “Huh. And we all live in the same town, ay? Knox, I think I’ve heard your name. Do you know Jun and Sebastian? They have the turquoise impala lowrider?” Knox said, “Yeah, they’re good guys.” Val said, “Jun is my cousin. Small town.” Picknar said, “Small world.” knox said, “Small solar system.” Rodrigo said, “Small galaxy.” Yakky said, “Small universe.”

“Why ARE they here?”
I don’t know much about Christopher, well, apart from what we have all discovered over the span of this monstrous† Space Opera™, but I suspect that he, like me, would have been saying “Take me, take me!” at the human passenger loading scene towards the end of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
† I mean that in the nicest possible way.
Until they find out that they’re actually in the classic Twilight Zone episode “To Serve Man”.
Wait until they hear about the 3 Degrees of Zorilla.
I’m sure he vacationed in their town at least once, making enough noise to be memorable.
The universe is wide but extremely shallow.
The homeboys convene with the homegirls. Something to be said for neighborhood ties, and being able to remember people by their cars. Ties of this sort are invaluable in their own right, and not to be idly dismissed.
I have a ‘small world’ story on something like this scale, but it won’t fit here. Suffice it to say I’m not in the least surprised they’re all together again.
