I like it when characters keep expanding themselves beyond what I imagined. I mean, I liked Yakky, but she seems to keep on being a really interesting and complex side-character.

-Yakky approached the bridge of their ship where Lasper stood alone looking out into space. Yakky said, “How’re you doing?” Lasper said, “Oh, I don’t know, Yakky.” Grinning, Yakky said, “Not knowing is what you do best, Lasper.” Half-listening, Lasper replied, “Thank you.” Sitting down, Yakky lectured him, “And of course you don’t know! There’s still no plan! And when they do come up with one, it’ll probably end up with you getting killed or getting thrown in prison yourself. “I’m telling you, as your friend, don’t do it. I’ve seen you fall in love before. It comes and goes. Val is just the newest pretty face in a line of pretty faces.” Unaffected by the speech, Lasper said, “This time is different. Or, it could be if she forgives me. But what can one do except follow one’s heart?” Exasperated, Yakky said, “That thing in your pants is not commonly referred to as the heart you know.” Lasper said, “Actually, I’ve read enough poetry to know that it commonly is.”
